Mid-infrared free-electron laser-evoked discharge of crayfish compound eyes

چکیده
Light perception is an intriguing subject, and it has been demonstrated that some animals can perceive wavelengths beyond human vision. However, it is still controversial whether animals can see mid-infrared radiation. A combination of two free-electron laser (FEL) facilities, LEBRA-FEL (Nihon University) and KU-FEL (Kyoto University), can provide light sources with high peak power and spatially coherent monochromatic wavelengths that are continuously tuneable from 400 nm to 20 μm. We show that the crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) compound eye responds to pulsed mid-infrared FELs (1 Hz for KU-FEL; 2 Hz for LEBRA-FEL) from 3 to 17 μm. Our finding provides insight into the animal’s visual sensing of mid-infrared radiation, and that the sensing does not depend on thermal effects. Although the behavioural reason for vision in this wavelength range and the mechanism are still under investigation, understanding this type of visual sensing may lead to applications other than photophysical applications.

We demonstrate the measurement of single-shot spectra of temporally selected micropulses from a mid-infrared free-electron laser (FEL) by upconversion. We achieve the upconversion of FEL pulses at 11 μm using externally synchronized Nd:YAG or microchip laser pulses at 1064 nm to produce sum-frequency mixing signals at 970 nm, which are detected by a compact CCD spectrometer without an intensifi...

PURPOSE To use histological techniques to assess and compare the ablation depth, local damage, and surface quality of corneal ablations by a Q-switched Er:YAG laser, an optical parametric oscillator laser at 2.94 microm, a long pulse Er:YAG laser, and a 193-nm excimer laser. METHODS Human cadaver eyes and in vivo cat eyes were treated with a 6.0-mm diameter, 30-microm-deep phototherapeutic ke...
متن کاملImaging single living cells with a scanning near-®eld infrared microscope based on a free electron laser
We report the ®rst sub-wavelength mid-infrared images under water, and describe an application to obtaining images of single living cells in water using the Stanford Free Electron Laser (FEL). Spatial resolution is enhanced at the peak of infrared absorption of water. Images were obtained of single motile ®broblasts with the FEL wavelength tuned to absorption peaks of both protein and lipid mol...
متن کاملSecond Harmonic Generation Spectroscopy in the Reststrahl Band of SiC Using an Infrared Free-Electron Laser
The Reststrahl spectral region of Silicon Carbide has recently attracted much attention owing to its potential for mid-infrared nanophotonic applications based on surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs). Studies of optical phonon resonances responsible for surface polariton formation, however, have so far been limited to linear optics. In this Letter, we report the first nonlinear optical investigati...
متن کاملNumerical Investigation of the Non-Uniformity of the Electric Field Distribution by Injection of Net Electron Charge in TE CO2 Laser
In this report, the distribution and deviation of electric field in the active medium of the TE CO2 laser has been investigated due to the injection of net electron charge beam as a plasma generator. Some parameters of system have been considered, such as density and mean-free-path of injected charge beam. The electric potential and electric field distribution have been simulated by solving the...
